How E-readers are changing publishing
It is pretty obvious to say that e-readers have an incredible growth since the first e-reader appeared on the market and to say that e-readers are changing the publishing industry, There are several e-readers options from the Kindle to the iPad and the Nook available, which means the competition for the most popular best e-reader is growing as well. The number of e-readers sold in 2010 globally was 12 million and in 2011 was 14.7 million which shows that more people are buying e-readers every year. (1)
E-readers are changing publishing, publishers are now interested in having an e-book side to their publishing. Some publishers are seeing e-readers as another form of distribution saying that the book just gets to the customer in a different, quicker form (2). Other publishers have said that due to the e-book phenomenon 'publishers are not waiting a year to release less expensive paperbacks' (2) meaning that the less expensive books can be published quicker meaning more books can be published. I feel that e-readers are the future of publishing as it is becoming easier for people to read wherever they are, instead of carrying a heavy book in your bag, all you carry is your e-reader which will have your whole library of books on. This is a major advantage to e-readers and one that may be the main reason to push traditional paperbacks and hardbacks out of the book market.
E-readers aren't just changing publishing and the book industry in economically developed countries for example the world reader organisation went to Ghana and Kenya and have introduced e-readers to the classrooms. This means that the children can now read more relevant books and have more freely open access to e-books. This has already shown a change with more of the children reading more and reading better, which will give them a brighter future in the working world (3). After reading many articles and blogs about how e-readers are being used this was the one that caught my eye the most because, even countries that don’t have hot running water and electricity are able to use the advantages of e-readers by using solar,-panel power.
To sum up, e-readers are changing publishing as this is now a new category that is a 'must-have' for publishers in the modern industry and more and more people are buying e-readers and e-books instead of actually books.
