Since the launch of digital publishing, publishers have been working on new and better business models and technologies for digital product to be able to get the best out of digital publishing. The most recent news for digital technology for publishing is that HarperCollins Publishers have invested in a global publishing system called ‘Global Product Manager’.
On the 11th October 2012 it was announced that HarperCollins are to launch its new publishing system. It has been said to be ‘one of the largest undertakings of its kind to be implemented by a trade publisher’ (1).
HarperCollins have developed Global Product Manager with Publishing Technology to allow HarperCollins to join editorial, marketing and business data around the world, this will help the company to have the infrastructure to make the most of its widespread catalogue of books, e-books and apps (2). This will help widen the reach of its print and digital publications.
The system will allow the staff at HarperCollins to open up and discover current and future business models and content delivery types (3). Other advantages to this sytem are:
· Greater visibility of product data
· Excellent metadata maintenance
· Ability to create new business models and better leverage rights
· Monitor cost and performance
· Improve retailers relations through improved access to data (1)
This system is going to be launched in the USA first the UK, Australia, Canada and so on in 2013. I think this system will change the way HarperCollins will now publish print and digital content as with the help of Global Product Manager they are going to be able to reach its core target Markets easier. Not only will this change HarperCollins but will also change any publishing company working with them. This system will also allow them to focus more on the content enabling them to adapt to different formats depending on the need of the business. This will help provide the author with a broad reach through HarperCollins print and digital platforms globally. So overall all parties involved in publishing with HarperCollins are going to benefit this system. Introducing a new system like this will always be risky, especially when it involves new products. This system is going to have to be powerful enough to withstand HarperCollins global business to be relying on it, otherwise it just won’t work. I’m sure we will find out soon enough whether it is going be a success of a failure.
